An increasingly large proportion of Y-Not Natural's research and development budget is applied research, using scientific knowledge to develop a product targeted to a specific use. If the discovery phase yields promising compounds, technical teams then attempt to develop a safe and effective product based on the discoveries. To test new products in development, a research method called "screening" is used. A sample is first placed in a bacterial culture. If the natural preservative is effective, it is next tested on a number of people. Around 5-10 selected families also are used to study the safety and efficacy of the product. Product screening is an incredibly laborious, and costly process-only 1 in every 10-20 compounds screened eventually becomes an approved product to enter the market.
